What makes cheerleading really different from most other sports is that in many cases it is just as much about looking the part. Walking into a tryout, you want to look athletic, but also well put together. I’ll break it down by what to wear to school cheer tryouts as well as all star cheer tryouts.
School Cheer Look: Most school teams do not permit athletes to only wear sports bras and spandex to cheer. My best tip is to wear the school’s colors to the tryout, unless you are told to wear something specific. For example, my high school is green, black and white; so typically, we would wear a black shorts and either a green or white shirt to tryouts. Make sure you have a comfortable and supportive sports bra, as well as a good pair of athletics shorts. For sneakers, usually coaches may recommend sneakers to get in advance, if not, any athletic sneaker will do. Here’s a tip though, if you know someone who is already on the team, ask them if they have an extra pair of shoes, chances are, they always have a back up pair.
All Star Look: All star cheerleaders tend to be more flashy with practice uniforms. Usually, a bright colored sports bra in the gym’s color and a pair of black spandex will do. If the gym really doesn’t do sports bras, a t-shirt or tank top in the gym’s colors will be just fine. As for shoes, ask when you sign up for tryouts what shoes they recommend. Sometimes, you will need to only have specific shoes for inside the gym.
Tying it all together: Put a bow in your hair sporting the gym or school’s colors!
